What is CBD?
CBD is a legal, all-natural organic supplement that comes from the hemp plant and has wide reaching health benefits.
HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?
First, it’s important to understand that CBD is a cannabinoid. In the human body we have an Endocannabinoid System, which means we naturally produce cannabinoids. When we use CBD, we are not introducing new chemicals to our bodies as we do so often when we take other medications; we’re actually enhancing what’s naturally already there.
Second, our body has natural chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals control much of how our bodies function, such as sleep, mood, pain management, cognitive function, energy, stress, inflammation associated with chronic pain, and so much more.
We also have millions of tiny receptors that are designed to absorb these neurotransmitters and maintain the appropriate chemical balance our bodies need. This balance (or homeostasis) is critical to good health. Unfortunately when these receptors loose their efficiency they can cause too much or too little chemical to be used. This is when we see conditions like anxiety, insomnia, depression, loss of energy, chronic pain, and so on.
CBD helps these receptors run more efficiently resulting in the appropriate balance of chemicals for ideal health. It’s kind of like a V8 engine running with clogged fuel injectors. You are getting some of the power out of the engine, but with proper care (flushing your fuel injectors) the motor will run more efficiently and produce more power with less effort. CBD is essentially an ongoing fuel injector flush for your receptors.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT CBD?
First, CBD works. The result is described by many as a wave of relief or relaxation that can be felt throughout the whole body. Topical application results in a near instantaneous reduction in swelling, pain and discomfort. To be clear, the effects are typically pretty mild, but that’s the point. Many first time CBD consumers look down at their watch 30 minutes after ingesting/applying CBD and think, “I don’t feel anything, is it even working?” An hour later, they totally forget about their anxiety, pain, inflammation – you name it. This example serves to illustrate the subtle, yet extremely effective healing properties of CBD. You won’t feel anything out of the ordinary, but after 90 minutes you’ll suddenly realize that your anxiety, pain or inflammation has totally melted away.
Second, CBD is legal. Thanks to the 2018 United States Farm Bill, signed by the President on December 20, 2018, hemp derived CBD is Federally legal to purchase in all 50 states. CBD is cultivated from hemp. By definition, and Federal Law, hemp plants can contain a maximum of 0.3% THC. Don’t be alarmed…this is a good thing as CBD and THC interact synergistically to increase each other’s curative qualities. For example, CBD enhances THC’s anti-inflammatory and painkilling properties, while lessening THC’s psychoactive properties.
It is worth pointing out that while marijuana and hemp are closely related due to both plants having cannabinoids, they are not the same. Marijuana has psychoactive properties designed to get you high; CBD does not. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid used for alternative medical purposes.
Third, CBD is safe. Taking too much CBD is kind of like taking too much vitamin C—your body discards what is not used. Recent studies have shown people taking 30 times the recommended daily dose with no ill effect. More importantly, it is non-addictive. Addictive substances trigger a release of dopamine in the brain’s pleasure centers and over time, the body becomes dependent on the substance, experiencing withdrawal symptoms if a person stops using it. CBD, however, works to balance the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain—if there is too much of one neurotransmitter, CBD will help to lower it, and if there isn’t enough of another, CBD will help bring it up to a balanced level. Plus when you stop taking it, there are no “cold turkey” withdrawal symptoms.
So…are you ready to give CBD a try? What do you have to lose? Pain? Stress? Anxiety?
The Human ECS
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) plays a major role in the human body and homeostasis. Homeostasis is the bodies way of keeping everything balanced. When the body is in perfect alignment it will function better, and, in turn, increase ones’ overall well being.
The ECS is made up of three parts:
- Endocannabinoids
- Receptors in the nervous system
- Enzymes that help break down endocannabinoids and cannabinoids
The ECS is a naturally occurring part of our bodies and crucial to its proper function. Just like any system, the body is constantly monitoring everything (examples include, but are not limited to, body temperature, hormone levels, heartbeat, etc.). When one of these is outside normal or acceptable range the ECS is activated to help correct it.
The ECS system does this via cannabinoid receptors found in the cell surfaces that impact various biological processes. The Endocannabinoid System consists of two receptors, called CB1 and CB2.

CB1
Found throughout the body on cells associated with our immune system.
CB2
Located in the brain, central nervous system, and many other parts of the body.
Cannabidiol
CBD is one of the primary cannabinoids found in hemp. It interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors.
Cannabinoid receptors are believed to be among the most abundant in our central nervous system. Because cannabinoids can help stimulate activity within the ECS, CBD can potentially help regulate the human bodies functions controlled by the ECS.
Through those receptors, the ECS helps regulate key functions, such as:
- Appetite
- Digestion
- Immune function
- Inflammation
- Mood
- Sleep
- Motor control
- Memory
- Pain
Science is continuing to study the affects of CBD on the ECS and how it can be used for potential treatments to a variety of ailments.
Take products tested by independent third party labs
Not all CBD products are created equal and with so many products on the market it can be difficult to ensure you get your money’s worth. More importantly, your experience with CBD is tied directly to the quality of the CBD you consume. One easy, effective way to weed out lower quality CBD products is to ask for their COA’s (Certificate of Analysis). When you use Melior products you can have confidence you’re getting exactly what you paid for AND the highest quality CBD available. Melior products are certified by third party labs and registered with the state of Utah to ensure quality. View our COA’s HERE.
Dial in your dosage
Regarding dosage, everybody and every body is different. There are countless variables such as weight, diet, metabolism, genetics, and more that make a universally prescribed dosage difficult…and while we would love to provide you with a CBD dosage calculator, it isn’t quite that simple—estimates based on traditional use and expert opinion are about as good as it gets.
That said, the Melior Serving Standard is 25mg of Full Spectrum CBD, taken twice daily. You may find it helpful to record your daily experiences in a journal so you can accurately narrow in what mg dosage works and feels best for you.
Be consistent!
The key to any dietary supplement is consistency. Make sure to take your CBD dosage regularly. If you miss days or servings this can affect how CBD helps support your ECS in maintaining homeostasis.
